MICHAEL VICK'S EARLY FAMILY LIFE

Family Background
Michael Dwayne Vick was born to Brenda Vick and Michael Boddie, who were unmarried teenagers at the time of his birth. They married when Michael was about five years old. Vick was the third of four children in a family that faced financial struggles. His mother worked multiple jobs, while his father worked long hours in the shipyards. The family lived in Ridley Circle Homes, a public housing project in a crime-ridden neighborhood, which exposed Vick to violence and hardship from a young age. 

Childhood Experiences:
Growing up in Newport News, Vick often sought refuge from the violence around him through sports and fishing. He described fishing as a way to escape the stress of his environment, stating, "I would go fishing even if the fish weren't biting, just to get away from the violence and stress of daily life in the projects". His early exposure to sports, particularly football, was influenced by his father, who began teaching him the fundamentals of the game when he was just three years old. Vick's athletic talent was evident early on, and he participated in youth sports at the local Boys and Girls Club, where he honed his skills. 

Education and Athletic Development:
Vick attended Warwick High School, where he excelled as a quarterback. Under the mentorship of coach Tommy Reamon, he developed his skills and became one of the most highly regarded high school quarterbacks in the nation by his senior year. His performance earned him a football scholarship to Virginia Tech, where he continued to impress, leading the Hokies to an undefeated regular season and a national championship game appearance.
